Electrical Engineer (EIT) - High Voltage Laboratory

Surrey, BC, Canada
Full Time
Entry Level
Powertech’s High Voltage Laboratory is the largest of its kind on the west coast of North America, supporting distribution‑ to transmission‑level testing for utilities, manufacturers, and infrastructure owners. Our work is hands‑on, fast‑paced, and directly connected to real‑world power systems.

We are looking for a Junior Electrical Engineer (EIT) who enjoys working in a lab environment, pays strong attention to detail, and is excited to learn through hands‑on testing. This is an excellent opportunity for an early‑career engineer who wants exposure to high‑voltage equipment, real projects, and experienced technical team.

What You’ll Do
Reporting to the Team Lead of High Voltage Laboratory services, you will support day‑to‑day High Voltage Lab operations and gradually take on increasing responsibility as your experience grows.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Support high‑voltage testing activities, including test setup, execution, calibration, and equipment maintenance.
  • Assist with test planning, proposal development, and cost estimates, working with applicable IEEE, IEC, CSA, and ANSI standards.
  • Work on multiple projects at the same time, coordinating with technicians, engineers, and clients to meet schedules and milestones.
  • Participate in hands‑on testing, troubleshooting, and resolving technical issues during test execution.
  • Apply engineering fundamentals to problem‑solving, analysis, and continuous improvement.
  • Support failure analysis investigations under supervision of senior engineers and contribute to accurate test results and reporting.
  • Help maintain and improve lab equipment, processes, and safety practices.
  • Communicate clearly with internal teams, clients, and suppliers, asking questions early and escalating issues when needed.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys being in the lab, on the floor, and close to the work, not just behind a desk.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Eligible for registration (or currently registered) as an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC
  • Strong interest in hands‑on engineering work and learning through experience
  • Good attention to detail, organization, and follow‑through
  • Comfortable multitasking and working in a dynamic environment
  • Clear communicator who works well in a team and is willing to ask for help
An asset but not mandatory
  • Exposure to electrical testing, power systems, or lab environments
  • Familiarity with transmission or distribution equipment
  • Experience from co‑ops, labs, capstone projects, or field work
Performance Competencies
  • Strong commitment to safety in laboratory and field environments
  • Willingness to learn and follow procedures while developing independent judgment
  • Ability to write clear technical notes and contribute to test reports
  • Collaborative mindset and positive team attitude
  • Interest in growing technical depth and responsibility over time
